Hey guys lemon lust here with a tutorial on how to get started making TAS videos with melee. But first I want to thank @MagicScrumpy for all the help he's given me. You can follow him at @magicscrumpy at twitter and on twitch. He's done various melee TASvideos like What If Ness's B-Air Were as Strong as the Knee? and many others You can send in your TASes to him if you want yours critiqued. Let’s get started. The only thing you will need is a computer that runs dolphin pretty well. A good Quad Core processor and a decent graphics card should be enough. You can also grab a Mayflash GC adapter for the PC but I'll be only covering how to TAS with the TAS Input tool bundled with Dolphin which I'll show here in a bit. First thing you need to do is download the latest version of dolphin from their website at https://dolphin-emu.org/download/ and extract it to your desktop. I'm using revision 5886 Next you will need to obtain a legal copy of melee version 1.02 You should be able to figure out yourself. Put that melee copy in a separate folder called ROMs. Preferably on your desktop Once you have your melee copy on your computer and you have extracted dolphin go into the folder you extracted dolphin and run the program. Here we need to configure some things before we start TASing. Click on the browse button and locate the folder you put your Melee copy in. I've already located my melee copy here. Right click on Super Smash Bros. Melee and click properties. We need to enable an AR code. Click on the AR codes tab and enable Global Melee Netplay settings. This is my prefered code as the game will instantly start in character select with all stages and characters. It will also disable items and enable stock mode with 8 minutes and 4 stocks. The tournament standard setup. Click close to save changes. Next we will click on the config button and in the general tab we will have to uncheck [Enable Dual Core] and [Enable Idle Skipping] Make sure JIT Recompiler is selected for the CPU Emulator Engine. Next under interface I always have on-Screen display messages turned on. The other options here are optional. change the DSP Emulator Engine to DSP HLE emulator. Change the audio backend to no sound. Don’t Worry, I will be show you how to get your audio later Next under the gamecube tab make sure Slot A, B and SP1 are set to nothing. Under Wii make sure no options are checked. However I like to change the Aspect Ratio to 16:9. With this option set to 16:9 you can export your videos in the youtube standard 16:9 video at 720p or 1080p. Click okay to save your config. Next we will go into the graphic settings. The most important part is to set your graphics backend according to what kind of graphics card you have. AMD users will use DirectX and Nvidia users will use OpenGL. If you have no idea what your graphics card is just type device manager into your windows search bar. With the device manager opened up expand the display drivers tab. I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 so I will select OpenGL. Set your full screen resolution to your monitors highest resolution option. Most standard monitors are at 1920 by 1080 but some people might have 1440p or other higher resolution monitors. Change the aspect ratio to Force 16:9. in the other section. Have Render to main window checked. You can also check Show FPS or other options if you wish. In the Enhancements tab I would leave everything unchanged except Scaled EFB Copy and Widescreen hack. If you want High Definition look Try changing the internal resolution to something like 2x or 3x native. The Anti-Aliasing to 8x. and The Filtering to 16X. I have a Quad Core processor and a GTX 970 so these are the settings I use. You can tune down these settings you have frame dropping. Experiment with settings. The goal is to keep a constant 60 fps while having a good looking HD feel for our melee. Under the hacks tab Check Ignore Format Changes. Store EFB Copies to Texture Only. Disable XFB and enable fast depth calculation. Everything in the advanced tab should be unchecked. We need to set our hotkeys but first we need to close dolphin. Navigate to your documents folder and find the Dolphin Emulator Folder Go into the config folder and delete the hotkeys configuration file. Recently dolphin has changed how it handles hotkeys and if you've had older dolphin versions installed then you might come into the problem of conflicting hotkeys. Open up dolphin again and go to the options drop down menu and select key shortcuts. Here we need to setup some important hotkeys that we will use to TAS with. We first need a frame advance hotkey and a play pause hotkey. I've select Num pad 7 for frame advance and Numpad 8 for play pause. Go into the state saves tab. This is the most important part of TASing. Save states will allow you to set checkpoints or markers that you can go back on if you mess up a certain action. Save states store all inputs made before that state. So if you mess up later on you can load up a save state and try again. Set up as many savestate and load state hotkeys as you need. The more the better. I've set 3 save keys and 3 load keys. Numpad 1 2 3 are my saves and numpad 4 5 6 are my load states. Go into the controller options and select standard controller for port 1 and uncheck all options such the wiimote motor and speaker data. And make sure we have all wii motes checked to none. Wii motes can cause desyncs which will ruin our TAS. If you want to control two characters then select a standard controller for port 2. Go into the movie drop down and check frame counter and input display. This is just some on-screen information that will help us with our tas. Now with all the configuration set we can finally start TASing. To start we will need to select our super smash bros. melee game to highlight it. Next go into the movie drop down menu and select TAS input. this is what you will be using to control your character. Go into the movie drop down and select start recording input. As soon as it loads up a black screen we need to pause the game with your hotkey or by pressing pause right here. using the advance hotkey, advance a few frames until you see the character select screen. Use the TAS Input panel to help you select your character and a CPU. Use the advance frame hotkey to advance frames as you go. Once we have select our characters select a stage again using the TAS input panel. Once the match has started we need to make a save state. I will use my first save state key Numpad 1. If we make a mistake then I will use the numpad 4 key to go back to this state. Advance the frames until it the screen flashes GO. You will now be able to control your character. Using the TAS input panel start messing around with inputs to control your character while advancing the frames. If you liked a certain action or move you did then make a save state and keep going. Use as many save states as you need because once you overwrite old save states you cannot go back to a previous point in the match. Now all you have to do is Frame Advance and input the actions you want to do. Make savestates if you like what you did. If you don't like what you did or if you mess up then just load that previous savestate and try again. It also helps if you play melee and know a bit of tech skill and mechanics. Once you’re done with you’re done with your TAS create one final save state. Go into the movie drop down menu and select export recording. Save it to where ever you want. Close dolphin. You will be prompted to save your recording again. You can make a copy if you want but you can just click cancel. Now we need to dump our frames and audio from our TAS. But first we need to download Lagarith Lossless Codec. Search up Lagarith Codec into google and click on the first result. On their website just download the installer and install the codec. Go down to the movie drop down menu and check dump frames and dump audio. Go into the menu again and select play input recording. Select the file we exported earlier. You will be prompted to delete something. Just say no. A window will pop up. Change the setting to Lagarith Codec. Click configure and change the mode to YV12 and check Use Multithreading. Your audio and video file will be put into your Dolphin Emulator folder located in your documents folder. Use a video program to put the audio with the video. And there you have it. If you like this video then subscribe and give me a like. Share with your friends and show me some of the TASes you've made after watching this video. Thank you for watching. Stay tuned for future TAS tutorials on my channel.
