Press Y! RainbowSprinklez has found out that pressing Y on the frame where you bounce on an enemy before a superjump results in a superjumproll. This is essentially a superjump with more speed, and (the following is still to be concluded) would save time in most stages where you can execute a superjump (3-3, 5-1, 6-1, 6-3 seem to be the big ones right now). The time save here would be significant. Obviously this seems like great news for most speedrun watchers, but as most speedrunners know, this leads into an inevitable category argument. So I guess I'll give my 2 cents. From what I have noticed when these things happen, the majority - and that includes people that do not play the game - wants the trick to be included into the main category. This seems logical, as it is a time saver after all. But usually, most runners of the game normally aren't too fond of having a bunch of frame perfect tricks being thrown into the route, and skipping major sections of the game. In this case, Oil Drum Alley (5-1) and Misty Mine (6-3) are two classic stages of pure platforming, and are usually considered fun levels to play. This is why often, a community decides to make separate categories. A good example of this would be the ALTTP community, who has done tremendously well considering the absurd amount of game-breaking glitches they have to live under. While their community gets a lot of flack (usually from people that do not run the game much if at all, and usually only have vague understanding of what YBA, OOBs or EG are capable of), I am of the opinion that their category differentiation is great. I will come back to ALTTP a bit later, and continue with the current DKC1 situation. So far, it does seem like most runners want a category separation. The issue is where the separation should be. Logically, the first and most popular option is adding the superjumprolls into the current Any% All Stages route, and creating a new category where major glitches are banned (No Major Glitches is the popular term these days, of course). This would make sense since banning a superjumproll and allowing normal superjumps and normal jumprolls into the same run seems contradictory. I mean, it is the logical and most organized way to go at it, so why not just do it and call it a day? Well, because doing so is bad for the game, in my opinion. It is oddly comparable to an administrative person making a logical decision for blue collar workers, without any first-hand vision of what it really entails. It looks really well on paper, and makes everything look great from the outside-looking-in. Everything fits into these neat and tidy category definitions. You do not require an odd category name (ex: Any% All Stages No Superjumprolls). Sounds great, right? Sure, but then arise the problem that, few people really want to compete into a jumproll lottery, and not a whole lot of people want to play with no major glitches at all (maybe I am wrong here, but from what I've gathered so far, I think this isn't too far from the truth). Additionally, separating that way would completely obsolete every recorded run of the game, as they wouldn't fit into neither category... though I guess the argument can be made that they can still be under Any% All, just with outdated strategies (shoutouts to Twig). It is the nature of speedrunning I guess, but it is painful to see times like 32:59 get invalidated in such a way. But anyway, my point of view is that the game's main category should be what people want to play, regardless of if the category is arbitrary, or if the category name sounds silly. Speaking of, I'll never understand why people make such a big deal over a category's name, as if a category nametag being odd should have any value as an argument. Oh well. I'll never understand why a lot of people get so uptight about categorization, and begin these crazy arguments about semantics and minor technicalities, and word definitions... Isn't speedrunning and playing video games about having fun? Why not keep playing the categories that people enjoy then? The LTTP community did not give a fuck when random people threw shit at them for making No Major Glitches after YBA was found. Why? Because that was the run that they enjoyed doing, and the run that they thought reflected a runner's skill more accurately. People yelled “arbitrary“, and they just played their game, improved their skills and had a great time. They still strove to beat Kryssstal's run from 2013, as it was still recognized as the best run of the game due to their smart categorization. No one was interested into forgetting the route for a new one with YBA in it, just like I'm not interested in forgetting the current Any% All route (and I know I'm not alone here). So yes, my suggestion is to let Any% All Stages have the new glitch, and rename the current route to Any% All Stages No Superjumprolls. Sounds retarded? Absolutely. Do I give a shit? No. Can a better name be found? Probably. All I know is, if no one is playing without superjumps/jumprolls/map warps RIGHT NOW, then creating the No Major Glitches category tomorrow is not gonna make people play it either. I don't expect you or anyone to agree with this, but it is my current opinion on things.
